Some hover, uneasily, in status between genre novel and mainstream novel. Critics and reviewers, intrigued by an author's intelligence and stylistic artistry, will insist that this genre novel must be evaluated amongst the mainstream novels. " It seems that every reader of romance holds vehement opinions as to what is and what is not a romance novel.

The reader of fiction is interested in the lives of other people, identifying with the characters. All types of genre fiction appeared on the best-seller lists from the beginning, and their history will be found in two now old but still informative and interesting books: James Hart's The Popular Book: A History of America's Literary Taste (Oxford University Press, 1950) and F. L. Mott's Golden Multitudes: The Story of Best Sellers in the United States (Macmillan, 1947).
